Has Anything So Great Ever Happened?

Selections from Deuteronomy:

Ask from one end of the heavens to the other.  Has anything so great as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of?  …Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation?”  4:32-34

“We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand…to give us the land he promised on oath to our forefathers.”  (6:21-23)  Your forefathers who went down into Egypt were seventy in all, and now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky. (10:22)  My father was a wandering Aramean, and he went down into Egypt with a few people and lived there and became a great nation, powerful and numerous.  (26:5)

“For you are a people holy to the Lord your God.  The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the people on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.”  (7:7)

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands.”  (7:9)

Every place where you set your foot will be yours.”  (11:24)  “Do not be terrified by them, for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a great and awesome God.”  (7:21)  Do not be fainthearted or afraid…For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you the victory.”  20:3-4

“And now, O Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?” 10:12-13

The Lord will grant you that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated…The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to…The Lord will establish you as his holy people…The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity…The Lord will open the heavens to send rain on your land…The Lord will make you the head, not the tail.”  28

You may say to yourself, ‘My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.’  But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant…”  (8:18  )”Such a person thinks…’I will be safe, even though I persist in going my own way.’  This will bring disaster on the watered land.  The Lord will never be willing to forgive him; his wrath and zeal will burn against that man.” (29)

Take some of the firstfruits of all you produce….and put them in a basket…Place the basket before the Lord your God and bow down before Him.  And you…shall rejoice in all the good things the Lord your God has given to you and your household.”  (26)

But to this day the Lord has not given you a mind that understands or eyes that see or ears that hear.”  (29:4)  The Lord your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants so that you may love him with all your heart and with all your soul and live.” (30:6)

This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses.  Now choose life, so that you and your children may live, and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him.  For the Lord is your life…”  30:19-20
